Why does South Carolina need Provost Academy? How does Provost Academy benefit students? How does Provost Academy benefit families?

Provost Academy Student Jacob Larson, Freshman in 2009-10.

Jacob Larson often misses school.

He doesn't cut classes; he physically can't be there because of a chronic illness.

But this fall, the Little River teen will be learning in an online classroom, one he can participate in even from a hospital bed.

Larson has enrolled as a freshman at Provost Academy South Carolina, the state's new online public high school. The free institution is now enrolling students for the fall semester.

"For us, the online school eliminates our largest problem and allows him to continue with school even when he is in the hospital," said Hope Larson, Jacob's mother. "This opportunity is going to let us be more involved and allow Jacob to get one-on-one help. I think it is going to be a huge relief as a parent."

As for Jacob Larson, his mother said he is ready to go to school wherever he might be.

[The school-provided laptop] "That is their classroom and I think that it will allow the students to connect to the learning," she said. "Plus, Jacob is very excited to not have to share his computer with his brothers."
