Two new charter middle schools and a statewide online charter high school will join EdisonLearning's national network of schools when the 2009-2010 school year begins this fall.
The Manny Martinez Middle School in Denver, Colorado; the Helen Thackston Middle School in York, Pennsylvania; and Provost Academy South Carolina will join EdisonLearning's current partners, which include 120 schools in 24 states.
Dr. Joseph Wise, EdisonLearning's chief education officer said, "The diversity of EdisonLearning's newest schools reflect the changing role of charters and the many different ways these schools are working with states, districts, families and students to offer high quality education solutions."
"Two of the new charter schools represent an expansion of our current work in each of these communities, and we are honored that our partners in Denver and York are supportive and confident of our ability to create dynamic and supportive learning environments," Dr. Wise said, "and Provost Academy is bringing students and parents in South Carolina a new online educational choice, built on a powerful tradition of proven results and innovation in public school education."
Provost Academy South Carolina is a new state-authorized public online school that is free of charge to residents of South Carolina, and offers high school students the choice of an engaging, adaptable and quality online-learning experience. Students work toward a regular public high school diploma - recognized by colleges and employers.
"PASC provides the state of South Carolina with the resources it needs to take advantage of the growing popularity of online learning," said Peter Brown, president of Colite International in Columbia and chairman of the Provost Academy South Carolina board.
In Denver, the Martinez Middle School will be the third EdisonLearning partnership school, joining the Omar D. Blair School and the Wyatt-Edison Charter School. Also in Colorado, EdisonLearning is helping increase student achievement for 1,400 students in 236 rural school districts through its academic tutoring program - Learning Force. Further, EdisonLearning is working with 56 schools in 3 districts as part of a statewide Colorado pilot program to close the achievement gap among African-American, Hispanic and Native American students.
"Educators throughout Colorado have access to a proven school design and the systems, tools, and training to help meet academic goals and build capacity for long-term student achievement," Dr. Wise said.
In York, PA, the Thackston Middle School joins the Lincoln Charter Elementary School as an EdisonLearning partner. Over the past eight years, Lincoln has been the fastest improving school in York City, and has progressed from being one of lowest performing, to one of the highest. "As a result of the solid academic improvement and performance by the students of Lincoln, more than 300 families requested the creation of a middle school," Dr. Wise said.
